Even though her name sounds Chinese, Lyen was born and raised in Cuba. Her ethnic background is Spanish/Basque, Afro-Cuban and Chinese. Her grandfather emigrated to Havana in the 1930s from a town in the Pearl River delta in southern China.
Lyen joined the school volleyball team when she was 12 years old and for the next five years participated in the Cuban national championships. This is where she first started with intensive physical training.
At age 15, Lyen started practicing Tae Kwon-Do for several years but during her university studies the athletic activities had to stand back. After finishing her education, Lyen started to work at a beach resort in Varadero and after just six months there she was asked to function as the fitness instructor and co-ordinator of the hotel. This is when she began training with weights.
In 2000, Lyen relocated to Europe with her husband, first to Spain and later to Germany. There, she started to work as a fitness instructor and, after being certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), as a Personal Trainer.
Lyen's competitive career began in 2005 when she participated in a regional fitness competition. She achieved the first place there right away, and went on to place second in the German national fitness championships and to win the Miss Universe fitness title that same year.
